Sharing what you have with the less fortunate is a very kind and generous gesture, and it can really make a difference to a needy cause. There are many ways to give to charity, and here are a few.
A recent study at the University of British Columbia in Canada revealed that people who gave to charity were happier than people who did not, and were also more likely to have a positive self-image.
There is nothing quite so rewarding than the warm and fuzzy sensation that comes over you when you know that you have done something positive to make someone else’s life better. If you have ever given of yourself in any way, you will know how rewarding this feeling of giving and compassion can be.
There are so many different charities to choose from, supporting everything from cancer sufferers to abandoned animals, children in abusive households, sex workers, environmental efforts, families in third world countries and many more.
If you want to give a little something, do your research and choose a charity that supports a cause you believe in and that you feel good giving your money to.
How do you donate to charity?
There are many different ways:
Give a one-off donation
Many charities will let you donate a certain amount as a one-off donation to support their cause. The amount you give is up to you, and no matter how much you give it is always appreciated.
Attend a charity event
From four course formal dinners to live music concerts, many charities hold events and performances to raise money for their cause. Oftentimes a portion or the whole amount of the ticket price will go towards the charity. You will have the added bonus of enjoying a great evening of entertainment while knowing that you are supporting something you believe in.
Bid in a charity auction
A charity auction is a great way to donate to your favourite charity. These events can work in a silent auction style, where the items to bid on are placed around the room and bids are written on sheets of paper. Or, they can be a more traditional live auction style with an announcer calling out the items to bid on and participants bidding out loud. When you purchase something, some or part of the proceeds goes towards the charity.
Visit charity shops
Try to buy a few of your items in a shop that supports a local charity. You can also support charity shops by donating your unwanted clothing or other items that are still in good enough shape to sell.
Give to charity trhough your salary
Some employers run a payroll giving scheme where regular donations to a charity are taken off your salary. The amount is taken off your paycheque before any tax is deducted, so that the charity can benefit from the full donation.
Leave money to charity in your will
This is a great way to ensure that your charitable intentions are honoured after your death and a way for you to pass on a legacy of generous giving. Also, all donations to charity are exempt from inheritance tax, so your charity will benefit more if you make a specific donation in your will.
Many charities have websites that allow you to give money online, making it quick, easy and super convenient to support your favourite charity.
Give your time
If you don’t have a lot in your bank account, don’t worry. You can still give something to the charity of your choice, and that is the valuable commodity of your time and energy. There are many opportunities to volunteer for charity groups doing a number of different tasks, so think about how your unique skills can contribute the most.
It’s easy to give to charity these days with so many different ways to donate, and no matter how you do it the experience will leave you feeling on top of the world.
