...Gilbert & George are among the most celebrated artists to have emerged from the art scene in the late 1960s...
In parallel and just for one evening (14th May 2014), The Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre will be screening "With Gilbert & George".
...Filmmaker, Julian Cole first met Gilbert & George when he modelled for them in 1986. His intimate and moving portrait filmed over 18 years, reveals for the first time the individuals behind the living sculptures. The film traces their lives from humble beginnings to the world’s artistic stage where they have performed their enigmatic and controversial double act for four decades...
Probably not the kind of art that everyone will enjoy and/or appreciate...but let's say something which has been around for quite a few years.
Whatever you think about these artists, it is however undeniable something part of the British art world... a bit like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and all other contemporary - extravagant - creators.
The Team behind this is small but determined: Les Bright, Penny Nicholson, Mattie Richardson, Sue and John (from the now almost legendary Café at 36).
I was in Exeter a few months back and managed to attend the official launch of that rather particular event.
It took place at Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre – there was an speech and a lot of samples from most participants listed on these vintage looking maps which were handed out and are still available from many retailers. They give a certain guidance if you are new in the city (tourists and students) but also if you want to discover the real heart of Exeter and all the little hidden gems.
It becomes a bit like a treasure hunt and you can't miss the window stickers to guarantee that you have reached one of the independent store. It is a big community sense and feel.
Exeter has been buzzing in the past 18 months with a few new developments and events to come attracting visitors from all horizons. There was even the BBCone's Antiques Roadshow around the Cathedral, which brought a few thousand people. Overall, a good day out and great activity in and around the unmissable meeting point and restaurants which is Cathedral Yard. Another good opportunity to discover and visit the outstanding landmark or even to bring back a souvenir even if just a fridge magnet or other keyring.
Then came the Apple iPhone...bigger screen (touchscreen) and hundreds of Apps available. Changing the way the internet was used. Very intutive too, no need to look into the end-users guide to find your way. Even avid BlackBerry users decided to go with the almost revolutionary device, being faster too with the implementation of 2G, 3G and more recently 4G mobile telecommunication technology. The data highway is just getting better and better and the amount of information exchanged is on the increase too.
Social media is a new way to share ideas, images and to interact.
The amount of innovation and high-tech involved to get all these news on (y)our screens is incredible and too often ignored. Nowadays, internet users want to connect everywhere and anywhere and WiFi is almost de rigueur from the coffee shop to the bus shelter.
All this is possible thanks to all submarine cables delivering what we are after, to and from the other side of the globe. Once you are aware of this spider web, it is not a surprise that it can take (sometimes) longer than expected to get a page uploaded.
"...The information age is powered by thin fiber-optic cables buried in the sea bed, spreading between continents to connect the most remote corners of the planet. These great arteries account for practically all of our international web traffic..." Source
Patience is a word which is almost forgotten and fast(er) is what people want, without actually thinking twice.
Despite of getting all information pretty rapidly, people are running out of time to do their daily tasks. How is such thing possible? The only answer would be related to the fact that Facebook, Twitter and other cyber-activities are taking over our lives and time. It is common to see a family sitting together in a coffee shop/restaurant/pub but the interaction is online and all the members are totally isolated and are (almost) ignoring their surroundings.
What can we expect from the internet for the next decade? Probably a lot of changes/innovations such as the "so wanted" Google Glass by a lot of people. Could this be just the start of something futuristic which will become our present?
